RHODE ISLAND DIVORCE MEDIATION AND FAMILY MEDIATION SERVICES
MAKE IT ALL ABOUT THE CHILDREN,
BECAUSE IT IS ALL ABOUT THE CHILDREN.
As parents, ourselves, we understand what divorce is like for children. At MOUTHPEACE MEDIATION LLC, we keep our focus on the needs of your children. We know that, during this difficult time, you are striving to give your children what is best for them, that you want to reduce the impact of the divorce on them, and your greatest hope for them is a happy childhood and a bright future. You can count on us to keep your children's needs in the forefront of every discussion that takes place in mediation.
"Difficult as a divorce is for parents, it is truly devastating for children, since they are completely dependent on their parents. Often, they do not know what is happening, and the guessing and uncertainty create traumas that may surface and demand attention much later in life. Many children never get to voice their pain, anger, and frustration in the way their parents do. As a result, they tend to feel extremely helpless, isolated, and confused. Still, children are remarkably resilient. although they experience great pain and feelings of loss, most children can and will recover if their parents allow them to heal. " Taken from "Helping Your Child Through Your Divorce" by Florence Bienenfeld, Ph.D.
All of the parents we talk with who are getting divorced want what is best for their children. Many divorcing parents are distraught over the pain and suffering they see their children experiencing during and after a divorce.
Children need both parents to be there for them during and after a divorce. There are some things parents can do to help their children:
1. Keep children out of the middle.
2. Provide an environment that allows children freedom to express their concerns and feelings, even negative ones.
3. Support contact with grandparents and other extended family.
4. Help your children feel good about themselves.
5. Consider family therapy or individual therapy.
6. Avoid criticizing the other parent.
7. Be flexible.
8. Both parents can help their children by establishing a workable means of communication with each other.
9. Children fare best when they have the emotional and financial support and ongoing involvement of both parents.
10. Consider mediation as an alternative to fighting in court.
Mediation is an opportunity to sit down and work out a parenting schedule, custody plan and division of assets and debts. Mediation is less costly and helps you to get through the divorce faster.
Mediation can also help after divorce when parents are unable to reach agreement about parenting issues.
