For Children Whose Parents Are Separated
- The right not to be asked to "choose sides" between their parents.
- The right not to be told the details of bitter or nasty legal proceedings going on between their parents.
- The right not to be told "bad things" about the other parent's personality or character.
- The right to privacy when talking to either parent on the telephone.
- The right not to be cross-examined by one parent after spending time with the other parent.
- The right not to be asked to be a messenger from one parent to the other.
- The right not to be asked by one parent to tell the other parent untruths.
- The right not to be used as a confidant regarding the legal proceedings between the parties.
- The right to express feelings, whatever those feelings may be.
- The right to choose not to express certain feelings.
- The right to be protected from parental warfare.
- The right not to be made to feel guilty for loving both parents.

All of the parents we talk with who are getting divorced want what is best for their children. Many divorcing parents are distraught over the pain and suffering they see their children experiencing during and after a divorce.Children need both parents to be there for them during and after a divorce. There are some things parents can do to help their children:
1. Keep children out of the middle.
2. Provide an environment that allows children freedom to express their concerns and feelings, even negative ones.
3. Support contact with grandparents and other extended family.
4. Help your children feel good about themselves.
5. Consider family therapy or individual therapy.
6. Avoid criticizing the other parent.
7. Be flexible.
8. Both parents can help their children by establishing a workable means of communication with each other.
9. Children fare best when they have the emotional and financial support and ongoing involvement of both parents.
10. Consider mediation as an alternative to fighting in court.
Mediation is an opportunity to sit down and work out a parenting schedule, custody plan and division of assets and debts. Mediation is less costly and helps you to get through the divorce faster.
Mediation can also help after divorce when parents are unable to reach agreement about parenting issues.
