FAQ

We know that divorce is difficult.  We are very familiar with the process. first, because we have been divorced ourselves, and secondly, because we are highly trained in mediation with advanced training in divorce mediation.

You may be planning to file your divorce yourselves, or perhaps you would rather have an attorney file it.  Either way, preparing a Memorandum of Understanding is the first best step.

The information provided below is intended to give you the information you need to get started.

Why create a Memorandum of Understanding?

A Memorandum of Understanding gives you control over your divorce.  It gives you control over how your assets are divided; control over what your parenting agreement looks like.  YOU DECIDE. If you don't take charge of your divorce, a judge or an attorney will.

How can MOUTHPEACE MEDIATION LLC help me?
We will prepare a Memorandum of Understanding for you.  And, If you wish to file your divorce yourself, we can provide you with information about how to do that.  If you want an attorney to file the divorce, we can refer you to attorneys who are mediation friendly and will not undo your hard work by creating greater tension and fighting.
Why should I choose MOUTHPEACE MEDIATION LLC?

We specialize in divorces involving children.  Children are our primary concern.  Our process is intended to create an environment that fosters cooperation and puts the needs of the children first.  We believe that you are capable of making decisions that are best for you and we support this belief throughout the mediation process.  We are focused on bringing out the best in both parties.  Many attorneys have been trained in law school to fight for the rights of their client and to follow the law.  While we are aware of the divorce guidelines and will make them available to you, in mediation you are encouraged to create your own agreement, one that meets YOUR needs and will be supported by the courts.

How do I get started with making an appointment to mediate my divorce?

Mediation requires the participation of both parties.  Usually one party calls us to get information.  While we are happy to talk to one party initially, we need to speak with both parties before we can start the mediation process.

If your spouse is not aware that you are contacting a mediator, the best thing would be to talk to your spouse about what you are doing.  This way, you will build trust right from the start.  And that will go a long way toward building greater trust during the mediation process.

How long does divorce mediation take?

The good news is:  You decide how long it takes.  If you and your spouse can reach agreement and the issues are not complex, it may take only a few sessions.  If the issues are complex and the parties are not prepared to share information, it takes longer.  Generally, it will take four to six sessions to complete the entire process and provide you with a Memorandum of Understanding.  But remember, You decide.

How can we set up an appointment?

Call us at 401-253-1394.  If we do not answer the phone, it is because we are with clients. We know that you understand that during mediation, our clients receive our full attention.  We will call you back the same day. If you find it helpful, we will send out a packet of information to both parties that tells you all about mediation and gets you started toward your first session.  We will provide the same information to both parties so that you are both equally involved in the process right from the start.

What are your hours?

We are flexible with our hours, because we know that busy people often have tight schedules.  We can offer daytime, evening or weekend hours.  Let us know what works for you and we will do our very best to meet your needs.

Where are your offices?

We have two comfortable settings for mediation.  One is in our home office at 9 Juniper Court in Bristol and the other is at the Smithfield Medical Center at 41 Sanderson Road, Smithfield, Rhode Island.

Can we meet with you to learn more?

Yes.  If you and your spouse are interested in meeting with us to determine if mediation is right for you, we are happy to set up a mutually agreeable time for you and your spouse to come in for a free consultation.  Contact us at 401-253-1394.
